THE CONTEMPLATIVE SHELTER
Terra Incognita, Latin for “unknown territory,” proposes a subterranean contemplative shelter situated within a private desert landscape. Visitors descend into a concrete enclosure organized around raw emerald formations and a central water feature. Water circulates upward through the surrounding walls before returning to its origin through a timed system. Yellow-tinted glazing filters views of the desert, altering the relationship between the protected interior and the landscape beyond.
Through descent, enclosure, material contrast, and recurring movement, the project explores how architecture can create conditions for withdrawal, heightened perception, and contemplation.
